Barangay

In Barangay, you take on the role of a "Datu" or Chieftain of your village community. The game is set in the historical era of the 16th-century Philippines from 900 to 1520 AD. During this period, the Spanish had not yet discovered the Philippines, and it was a time of economic trade and growth of various village settlements across the islands. The game combines the use of worker placement, action cards, engine building, resource management and tile-placement mechanics.

The overall goal of the game is to lead your village to become self-sustaining and build it from the ground up. You will place building tiles, hunt and fish for food, engage in trade with Japan, China and India, sail your boats to deliver trade goods, and develop your village to the fullest.

On your turn, you may choose one action card (Build, Trade, Hunt/Fish, Gather, or Perform Ritual) from your hand and activate the action on the card you want to take by spending a number of workers and resources required for it. Optionally, you may then place a set of workers and resources for a second action on a different card that was previously played by another player. These Action Cards go on a river and return back to the owner at the beginning of their next turn.

The game is played in turn order around the table until one player completes 5 achievements. These achievements are variable and make each game feel different every time you play. Points can be gained through engaging in trade, building out your village and upgrading them, hunting and fishing, completing blueprint objectives, and completing achievements.
