Mogontiacum: Historical Strategic game (Mainz), is a block game for 2 players.
One player controls the Romans, the other the Barbarians (Germanic tribes: Cherusci, Chatti, Marcomanni, Bructeri).
Towards the end of the Republic—spanning the 1st centuries BC and AD—the Romans had to hold their ground on the fringes of the vast Germanic forests. Launching offensives deep into the woods offered a way to push back the Germanic tribes (though the risks were high: historically, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, for instance, saw the annihilation of two Roman legions and the death of their commander, Varus). Well-adapted to their local environment and climate, these Germanic tribes frequently raided Romanized outposts. At the start of the game, each player strategically and deliberately deploys their treasures, terrain features, stratagems, and armies, arranging them as they see fit while adhering to certain historical and common-sense guidelines. Consequently, no two games are alike; the uncertainty surrounding hidden assets compounds the inherent uncertainty involved in strategic choices regarding army composition.
Beyond its gameplay mechanics, the game introduces two innovations for historical titles:
A game board made of crease-resistant microfiber matting, and Blocks with designs printed directly onto them during manufacturing (eliminating the need for stickers).
This game is not suitable for colorblind people.
